This year was my personal “Second Pour” with MRRN, and once again it was an amazing time with an amazing group! I’d never been to the U.P., and my friend Rhonda Jackson is originally from that area, so we decided to take the “Taste of Northern Michigan” theme to the next level by flying in early to experience the local flavor in Traverse City. What a beautiful place to enjoy a weekend getaway!
Our weekend adventure in Michigan started out with a bang, when upon our arrival, we were unexpectedly upgraded to a black convertible Mustang. Shout out to Budget for helping us do our sightseeing in style! We started off Friday with a drive up the lake coast. I’ve never seen anything like it—I could’ve sworn it was the ocean! Along the way we stopped in Petoskey for lunch, and found a great little place on the water for lunch called Beards Brewery, which we really enjoyed. After lunch, we drove over the Mackinac Bridge to visit Rhonda’s hometown of St. Ignace, where we really enjoyed checking out the sand dunes (and the casino!).
Saturday, we took a boat over to Mackinac Island to continue our adventures. We did the obligatory things: went to the Grand Hotel and sat on the largest porch in the world, took a ride on a horse-drawn carriage, and stopped in at the famous Pink Pony for a rum runner, then finished off our day with some local bar hopping, and a Sunset Sip ‘n Sail (AMAZING!).
Sunday was dedicated to driving to Traverse City and getting ready for MRRN to start, but we still managed to spice things up with some personal adventure. If you’ve never done it, make some time to drive through the “Tunnel of Trees.” It is gorgeous. Also, the Legs Inn is a great lunch spot with good food, and even better gardens and views.
Once we finally got to Traverse City, it was time to start my Second Pour adventure with MRRN. Major shout outs to the organizing committee for a great meeting. The rooftop welcome reception was awesome—the band was rocking it, and I really enjoyed the event. Thanks go to one of LocumsMart’s Vendor Members, GoldFish Locum Tenens, for sponsoring the event. It was a great way to start an excellent meeting. All of the speakers arranged by the MRRN organizing committee did an excellent job. HK Derryberry’s message was overwhelmingly powerful, and I was certainly inspired! Boat House was an amazing experience for the second year in a row. The Loft “After Glow” event was great—another band with a lot of talent! LocumsMart was grateful to have the opportunity to sponsor this event, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Also, congratulations to Susan Kaderle for winning LocumsMart’s bingo prize—a $100 Amazon Gift Card.
Finally, no U.P. adventure is complete without trying the local delicacies. I was able to knock most things off my list: a burger from Clyde’s, cheese curds, smoked whitefish, whitefish dip two different ways, and fudge—but I missed out on the Pasty (guess I’ll have to come back!), and of course, you have to have local cherries when in the Cherry City!
Once again, congrats to Sarah and Meaghan for putting together another amazing MRRN conference in Traverse City. LocumsMart and I are looking forward to being with everyone again next year in Detroit!
